In the equation x^2+kx+12 , k is a negative integer. Which of the following is a possible value of k?
A. -13
B. -12
C. -6
D. 7
E. It cannot be determined from the information given…
This is a question from princeton book.. The answer is A ..
Please explain me..
Thanx in advance..

Think about negative factors of 12. To have a negative number in the middle of that quadratic and then positive 12, the factored quadratic will look like (x – something)(x – something).

(x-1)(x-12)=x^2-13x+12

Ah yes, there it is. 🙂

BONUS ENGLISH TIP: I get a lot of questions, from a lot of different parts of the world, that say, “please explain me.” That is not how you say it. The correct thing you want to say is, “Please explain the question to me.”
